A New York Times article about Aflatoxins, a type of mycotoxin produced by molds that we find in homes on a regular basis. Aflatoxins are produced by fungi of the genus Aspergillus that can grow on damp surfaces in homes and on organic material like nuts, grains, corn and beans.
A Weakened Immune System
The World Mycotoxin Journal published a study measuring blood levels of aflatoxins and HIV in subjects never treated with antiviral drugs. The study found a positive correlation between high blood levels of HIV and aflatoxins, even in subjects with higher blood concentration levels of CD4 blood cells, meaning their infection was still in the early stage and not serious enough to yet be treated by triple-therapy cocktails according to World Health Organization guidelines. Aflatoxins are dangerous not only because HIV patients are immuno-compromised, but it is suggested that aflatoxins either contribute proteins which assist the production of HIV, or lessens the numbers of helper T-cells targeted by HIV, making the attack significantly more effective and dangerous.
